When it comes to getting dressed, I definitely have the most fun picking out my jewelry. Trends may come and go, but with jewelry, you should stay true to your individual sense of style. My personal taste is very eclectic—I love big, bold and even colorful pieces! If I’m wearing jeans and a simple blouse, I always like to take my look up a notch with a standout necklace, like the pink one I’m wearing here. This bold, multi-strand style was definitely the highlight of my outfit.

If you prefer earrings to a ring, you can recreate the look with a statement pair of chandelier earrings. I love the way a dramatic earring looks with a dress, when the neck is kept bare and the hair is swept up or to one side.

Which is all great, of course, apart from the minor fact that I don’t look or feel like Rihanna – nor do my boss, my mother or any of my friends. Which all makes me a little unnerved and not so convinced, although I do have enough experience to know that often we write off anything a little left of centre in fear of appearing silly. It’s a sort of built in self-protection mechanism we learn in infancy.

So, in that vein I will try to get to grips with it.

Like most face-wincing trends, it’s all in how we choose to wear the look that matters. I won’t insult you by warning you off a pair of actual pyjamas – that would just be idiotic, and I have more faith in you than that. Think elongated pure silk and wide-legged trousers, and for heaven’s sake, mind your expression – an unnerved expression will kill it; you must at least carry the notion that you know what you are doing.

Think of things as separates. Try pairing the trousers with a grey T-shirt or a crisp, white cropped jumper. If you are to wear the pyjama top, go for a slim-cut jean or cigarette trousers to balance things out.

Go for a bigger size than normal, as I always advise with silk or chiffon – remember, things should skim, not cling – and heels are a must to lengthen and create an elegant line.

Ironically, this should be the dream – or at least living the dream, for here we are finally being told to head out for the night in pyjamas. What’s to complain about? We should rejoice, as pyjamas are universally flattering, good and comfy around the old middle, and kind of cool. Yet it’s thrown most of us into blind panic. The punters are not helping by suggesting bright and brash florals, giving most of us the shivers after hearing the ever lovely Karl Lagerfeld’s comment, “Florals are for middle-aged women with weight problems”.

I have a cousin who spends hours digging through the closet to find the perfect outfit, only to spend a ridiculous amount of time in the bathroom, trying that outfit on.

Whenever we want to go out together, I usually end up waiting a long time before we actually hit the road. Typically female, many of you might think. But you’re wrong — this cousin is a guy.

Fashion and style used to be something that seemingly concerned only women, but boy, has this changed. And boy, are we glad that it’s changed, because it is nice to see well-dressed men from time-to-time, instead of sloppy ones.

But the operative phrase here is “from time-to-time.”

Even though women are expected to spend a considerable amount of time leafing through fashion magazines to keep up with the latest trends, and to run to the mall to get discounted Kate Spade shoes, there are exceptions to that rule. Me, for example.

Sure, when I am invited to a wedding, a fancy dinner at an expensive restaurant or a formal reception at an embassy, I like to dress up, and have fun doing it, too. (Even though it often causes my friends to make remarks like “Oh my God, you look like a girl,” or “I never knew you had actual legs beneath those jeans.”)

But besides special occasions, casual is my motto. I never understood how women can torture themselves in the name of style by wearing high heels the whole day when sneakers are simply much more comfortable. I still feel sorry for ladies of centuries past who had difficulties breathing because they wore tight corsets to make their waists look slimmer. 

It doesn’t make any sense to me at all to buy branded clothing items and accessories just for the fun of it, and to show off to my friends. There must be better ways to spend my money. Instead of purchasing a ridiculously overpriced Louis Vuitton handbag or a dress from Valentino, I’d rather buy new books, toys for my dog or save for my next trip to Europe.

And the same goes for men. Sure, I like to look at them when they are well-preened, but I’m highly skeptical of a guy who spends most of his salary on Armani suits and Rolex watches, because fashion trends change and beauty fades.
